The four sanskars - Vivah, Vanaprastha, Sanyas, and Antyesti - are specifically categorized as "Later Life and Death" sanskars in Arya Samaj.
While they are part of the broader Hindu lifecycle, Arya Samaj's approach to these stages and the associated rituals differs somewhat from traditional Hindu practices.
Vivah (Marriage)
Vivah, the sacrament of marriage, is considered a sacred institution in Arya Samaj. It is not merely a social union but a spiritual bond between two individuals. Arya Samaj emphasizes monogamy and equality between partners. Their marriage ceremony involves Vedic mantras and rituals aimed at creating a harmonious and fulfilling partnership.
Vanaprastha (Forest Dwelling)
Vanaprastha, the stage of retirement and preparation for spiritual life, is not strictly prescribed in Arya Samaj. They believe that individuals can continue fulfilling their duties and pursuing spiritual growth throughout their lives. However, they encourage a gradual reduction in worldly attachments and an increased focus on spiritual practices as one ages.
Sanyas (Renunciation)
Sanyas, the stage of complete renunciation, is also not a mandatory requirement in Arya Samaj. They believe that spiritual enlightenment can be attained while living a householder's life. However, they respect those who choose to adopt the Sanyas lifestyle, dedicating themselves entirely to spiritual pursuits.
Antyesti (Last Rites)
Antyesti, the final sanskara, is the respectful disposal of the physical body after death. Arya Samaj promotes cremation as the preferred method, believing it returns the body to its elemental components (earth, water, fire, air, and ether). Their Antyesti ceremony involves Vedic chanting, emphasizing the immortality of the soul (atma) and its journey after death.
Arya Samaj's Distinctive Approach
Arya Samaj's approach to these later life stages and death rituals is characterized by:
Emphasis on Vedic Principles: They strictly adhere to Vedic teachings and rituals, rejecting idol worship and elaborate ceremonies.
Focus on Karma and Spiritual Growth: They believe in the law of karma and emphasize spiritual growth throughout life, not just in specific stages.
Respect for Individual Choice: They respect individual choices regarding retirement, renunciation, and specific rituals, while providing guidance based on Vedic principles.
In summary, while Arya Samaj recognizes the significance of life's transitions and the final rites, their approach is rooted in Vedic principles, emphasizing spiritual growth, respect for individual choices, and a simpler, more meaningful expression of rituals.
